Colourful Palm Sunday Traditions

Colourful Palm Sunday Traditions

Friday, April 8, 2022

Palm Sunday is coming up on Sunday, April 10th. Poland has a number of cultural traditions associated with Easter. To bring to the forefront our Polish heritage, we thought we'd explain our Polish Palm Sunday traditions.

Polish palms are really long bunches made of young tree twigs, wheat, herbs, and flowers. They traditionally include willow twigs, which are the first green signs of life in Poland and symbolize life and resurrection. It's encouraged that each family makes their own palms to bring to church on the day. The palms are often very tall, colourful and decorated with ribbons and dried or artificial flowers. Many parishes also host competitions for kids, where the tallest homemade palm wins!

It really is the perfect way to start off Holy Week. Bright colours, everyone joyfully waving palms and singing "Hosanna!!"

What are some things you would include in your homemade palm for Palm Sunday?
