A Young Oblate Working in Kyiv

Deacon Paul Patrick OMI reflects on his pastoral year in Kyiv, Ukraine. He experienced ministry in three categories; street ministry with Brother Sebastian Jankowski OMI, Catholic Media Center and EWTN, and parish ministry. Deacon Paul was able to utilize his skills in mechanical engineering to help with the maintenance of equipment, create websites and databases, troubleshoot, and set up equipment in the Media Center. He also did a lot of translating from Italian or English to Ukrainian and vice versa. In the parish, Deacon Paul officiated funerals, baptisms, and weddings celebrated outside of Mass. Although he was not officially in charge of the youth in the parish, he often helped out with many functions and events that involved the youth. The youth were very devout and active, going on retreats together and performing liturgical events. Deacon Paul is thankful for the opportunity to perform his pastoral year in Kyiv and leaves with fond memories of ministry and the people he served.
